Actually, I can't stand people like this dude questioning my knowledge about a certain topic and my social environment, like this dude did. I definitely do not need half assed private lessons on the history of the Reverso. period.

Well, every post he'd made up until then was perfectly understandable. Then the two responses were entirely unintelligible, hence my comment.

And, FWIW, most native German speakers speak English more properly than the vast majority of Americans I know!

Well, if you're going to bring your "inside jokes" to the forum without making them known as such then expect people to correct misinformation they see within them. If you were joking about the Reverso, then make it known that it's a joke. If you were serious, then perhaps the history lesson should have been helpful because it provides evidence that your friend, whose opinions are the basis of your own, is flat out wrong.

And, FWIW, I was questioning your opinion, as I have no idea how far your actual knowledge extends or doesn't.

Perhaps you should give the other guy the benefit of the doubt. There are so many inaccurate statements posted on the net. Unless the other guy really knows you, he might believe that you truly thought the Reverso was for women.

I've seen you post that the Reverso is for women on at least one other occasion and I never knew why you said that. I didn't know whether you truly believed it was for women, or whether you said it because you don't like the watch.

You guys should both give the other guy the benefit of the doubt and get over this. Now lets all get back to the original poster's question about which watch to choose.

A fine choice, particularly for a fairly conservatively dressed banker. Featured rather prominently in The Thomas Crown Affair (Brosnan version) if I remember correctly.

If you like the shape and general look of the watch, but aren't finding what you want in your price range then consider the Baume et Mercier Hampton:

How about this? The IWC pilot watch transitions nicely from the office to weekends. IWC is mainstream I guess, but still not ordinary. Also, these slightly older versions aren't huge like the new ones.

Size wise he would be better off with a Mark XII.

JLC Reverso along with Cartier Tanks (vintage or Americaine) are excellent choices for normal folks who are not buying into the supersized diver watches that will rarely see rain, let alone deep water.

And if you want an understated Reverso, consider the 1931 tribute:




Of course, there are other great watches out there, but I think that these take the cake when it comes to timeless classics.

If you want to spice things up, consider Glashuette Original. Finish is pretty close to what Patek offers, but you pay a fraction of the price.

Of course, if you want to be a sleeper get Grand Seiko.

Personally, I would not want to touch any "tool" (as some people call them) watches if I had to wear one with a suit most of the time.

I'll add my 2 cents. I have 'average' sized wrists and have a non GT Reverso that looks fine on me as a dress watch, it does look small if I wear it on 'bare arms' eg with a polo shirt.

I still think the Hampton is a better bet than the Cartier; they are similar quality, in my opinion (though one has a more prestigious name) and you can find a better discount on a brand new B&M. Reverso still beats either, though.

Do not worry, I am quite sure you look fine if you don't follow today's fad of gigantic watches. If anything, a smaller watch on a bigger wrist looks better than a big watch on a small wrist.

Also, when you work in any industry where you have direct relationships with clients based on fees, e.g. financial advisory, selling insurance, etc., it is best to have a watch you can tuck under a sleeve, as it is gaudy to flash an expensive piece of jewelry, so the clients do not have to say, "Ah, I see where my money goes!"
