If your size is actually a 42L, I'd say a 50 would be best for you. I'm a 44 and the 50 fits me oversized still.

Not oversized from what I've seen. Go with your usual size.

I hope youre right - the pit to pit measurement on a 48 that i got from the retailer is 23.5" and the 46 was 22"----46 sold out though.

i'm a 38" chest and went with a 46. after receiving it i'm curious as to what a 48 would look like on me after a wash.

measurements from blackbird:
46 - pit: 21" length: 27.5"
48 - pit: 23" length: 28"

i;m guessing this is what he was talking about. looks like any regular sweatshirt, but with an interesting gradient. fabric feels like a japanese loopwheeler sweatshirt i had years ago, which is to say, better than a regular sweatshirt.
