I reallly should have been more clearer...

And yes, I understand, that all shoes have SOME machine work to it...

I should I said "Which shoes have the most handwork of RTW makers?" and how many makers do this?

I think the dividing line is handwelted and machine welted. For me at least. Andrew- I would stay away from Amesbury. I have heard some disturbing things about his workmanship from a couple of people who have been clients of his. They had nothing but negative things to say. For my part, his shoes look very average. You can do much better, for much less, elsewhere.

My Bruno Magli's say they're 'Handmade in Italy'. Does that count?

Any others?

Kiton; from what I seen, have an remarkable amount of handwork in it.

In Vienna you find excellent work from e.g. Balint, St. Crispin's or Maftei.

The owner of Bontoni shoes describes them as handmade and hand finished. I recall him saying that the soles were sewn by hand and not by machine.

Why do people get so pumped up about items being made without the usage of machinery? I guess they can point to all the errors, assymetries, and imperfections associated with being hand-made and say it gives the end product "character"

I would add to Iammatt comment handlasting. In my opininon the dividing line is handwelting (vs machine-goodyar welting) and handlasting (vs machine lasting). any shoe which is not handlasted and handwelted cannot be defined as entirely handmade, term of which the industry clearly and extensively abuse.

Tell me more. Why not with a suit?

Btw, Amesbury is highly regarded by the Maftei family. Though there is not much on the fora about him. Can you be more precise, Matt?

I think there was a post (or posts) where the message from Gaziano was that hand lasting is more precise than machine lasting + certain higher end materials will be destroyed by a machine.
