i turn it into a chat and go on gut....see how they handle it, see how they lead it, see if they take chances to get their experience into the conversation etc etc....

I wouldn't work for somebody who did that.

I would, unless I was totally desperate for a job, tell him to **** off. if I was desperate, I would manuver around to get the job, but I would be looking for a new job right away. in either event, you lose by doing something like that.

I have interviewed a lot of people over the years and the best advice I can give is ask open ended questions so that the interviewee is speaking as much as possible. The more talking you do as the interviewer the better you are going to think the interview went. Since you are speaking about things you are interested in, or yourself or your experiences you form a positive opinion of the person even though they haven't really told you much. Ask them questions that get them talking so you can get a good feel for their intelligence and personality.

I agree. I have interviewed hundreds of people but the best tip I got was while I was being interviewed by a headhunter. He started the interview with the simple request "So, tell me your life story". That was years ago and I have started every interview since in the same way.
