Are they cheaper than the California Bay Area? You can get a nice French castle for about two million.

Oh, I definitely agree that they're cheap compared to other places, but when I was looking for apartments, I visited a couple condos that were part of a new development on the edge of old montreal. The biggest one was about 560sq. ft. which was barely bigger than the place i'm moving out of.
They were really quite nice, but with the way they were setup (i saw 3 units) you did not have space for a 3seater couch and if you wanted a loveseat that meant you had to have a tiny table to eat at, and forget any thoughts about having people over. There wasn't even place for a 50" wall-mounted plasma. I've also seen units in Le District and they were also quite small. Some had more sq. footage but a lot of the space was wasted imo. I much prefer the older buildings with wide hallways, big kitchens, high ceilings w/moldings and big open rooms which pretty much limits me to houses, but at least I can knock walls down and do whatever I want to a house.

Unless you're looking in the 500k+ range, I don't think there are too many new condo developments that have a living room that's 22'x16' like the place i'm moving in to. And I definitely won't be looking for something that expensive on a single income. Even if I could get the financing, I wouldn't want a crippling mortgage or something I could only just afford. Realistically, I'll probably be looking in the 250k range unless i get married (highly unlikely at the rate i'm going).
