People who actually have Black/black/African-American friends actually know which term is appropriate. It's a shibboleth.

A co-worker referred to this other co-worker as African American. He looked at her and said, "no actually I am African African." I laughed. He is from Togo.

I overheard this on the street the other day. Twas good lulz.

Today I'm wearing Ralph Lauren Redways, an electric lime green PRL cableknit sweater with a pink pony logo, a white PRL shirt with fuchsia & lime green checks and a navy PRL patch pocket sport coat and Levis. I also have on fuchsia PRL socks with navy heel/toe/pony logo and plaid PRL boxers. I feel ghettoriffic!
