Is there a drink by the name of "vodka martini"? Sure thing. In fact, these days, if you don't specify gin you might end up with vodka if you just order a "martini." Is it a martini of any persuasion? Not according to some noted experts in the world of mixology, so take it up with them, not this high and mighty gramps.
It actually always bother me when I order a "martini" and am served some cocktail and not a Vermouth of the Martini distillery. Back to the 1860s!
Kidding aside, I agree with you. And I remember how surprised I was when I lived in the US and ordered a "martini" for the first time there.
