What a great ******* tournament so far.
Anybody else feel that the GER-GHA result does the USA no real favors?
From my perspective, a Germany win would have left 3 points as the maximum Ghana could reach. That would mean a draw between USA and POR would allow for a USA loss to Germany and leave Portugal needing to beat Ghana by as many as three goals in the final game to overcome the USA based on goal difference, depending on the USA-GER score line.
With Germany dropping points Portugal go into tomorrow's match feeling like they have an excellent chance to advance by beating USA and then taking a point or more from Ghana.
fivethirtyeight.com put it into words and math better than I did: Germany’s Draw Didn’t Help the U.S.+1. No chance of Germany fielding their scrub team to give their starters rest now. I just don't see the USA holding off Germany. If Germany beats the USA, they win the group with 7 points. USA needs a win against Portugal or a draw vs. Portugal and Portugal getting a draw vs. Ghana. I actually would not be shocked to see Germany advance with 7, USA with 4, Portugal with 2 and Ghana with 2. But a Germany win today definitely would have done a lot for USA.
