interesting. this is news to me

Some other "last" errors:

The Alden for BB shell PTB is on the M-58 last (not Barrie). I have it in color 8.
The Alden for BB shell perf captoe bal is on the Snap last (not Hampton). I have it in black shell.

Again, as to both, I am 100% certain.

A good night to you sir. I am signing off .....

Since we are kind of on the topic of rare shell...I've veen waiting for ( a few years now) for a shop to issue a make-up in pebble grain shell. Saw this pair back on 2007. But have not seen anything as of late...

Anyone know if something in this shell is in stock at a specific retailer?

I assume you mean the shortwing bal from BB. I agree it is underrated (I have it in black shell). The factory shortwing bal on the Tremont (I have it in color 8, wore it yesterday) is also underrated. Frankly, Alden shell bals get little discussion on this thread vs. bluchers.
The BB version is actually on the M-75 last (similar to Plaza). I am 100% certain of it, and it has been confirmed from an Alden rep at the Alden factory. Although it is very possible you were told Plaza by a BB worker (workers who, in my experience, know precious little about Alden shoes).

I really like the shape of my whiskey bals. Alden should make more balmoral shoes in general.

Mike from Epaulet floated the idea. I think these rare shell make-ups are solely in the hands of Alden and who they deem to be their best retailers. Just like #4 make-ups keep getting shot down, so do these. Leffot got a #4 this year, LS a few years ago with the 4x4, and shoemart has the boots, but I've not seen one of these done since that boot. I also think the shell is very rare...any idea how that pebble grain shell is made?

This is true. Also, for BB on the M58 (similar shape to the Barrie), it runs TTS.

I would think the pebble grain is embossed in the shell via press or putting it through a roller. And i would think that would have to be done between Horween and Alden by a 3rd party(unless Horween does it in-house, I really dont know). Alden being as behind as they are, I can imagine they'd shy away from adding one more step to the process...

Does anyone know where I can get a boot like this one (especially the Ravello) with a commando / lug / dainite sole?

http://www.theshoemart.com/alden-me..._m_9_eyelet_wing_tip_boot_shell_cordovan.html

I'm planning these as my big splurge for the fall, but I want them to be somewhat weather resistant.

Alden of Carmel stocks plenty of cordovan boots on commando soles, including a wingtip boot.

http://www.alden-of-carmel.com/index.cfm/Shoes-Color_8_Wing_Tip_Boot_222.htm

Some of the Alden branded stores may have similar boots in color 8 and black on commando. Alden DC does a cigar captoe on commando. As far as ravello, I don't believe i have seen a ravello boot stocked on a commando or a lug sole - your best bet would to be to see if anyone has a boot in your size and getting it resoled.

Some say TTS; some say size it like the Barrie (this thread has discussed this issue before, as I recall; there is no right or wrong).

I am TTS 9.5D.

My contact at the Alden factory tells me the M-58 and the Barrie should be sized the same. In my experience the M-58 is slightly shorter (I went to a 9.5C in M-58 from my usual Barrie size of 9D). However, I also have Barrie in 9.5C. Generally speaking, a 9.5D in Barrie and a 9.5D in M-58 are slightly too large for me. In my experience, a 9.5D in either the Barrie or M-58 (both of which I have tried on, or owned) is noticeably larger than other Alden 9.5D's.

Conclusion: try on a few sizes if you are able, IMO. :D
