grey sports jacket versatile? UPDATED with pictures

Hi gents,

I'm looking to expand my fall wardrobe. Currently I have:

* a brown herringbone (with subtle glen checks) tweed sports jacket
* a charcoal grey suit jacket (which I occasionally wear as an odd jacket with medium grey flannel trousers).

I'm looking for a medium grey sports coat and found this one at suitsupply http://eu.suitsupply.com/sv/jackets...ID&prefv3=Trubbiga slag&prefn4=size&prefv4=52



I like the alpaca wool texture that gives it a bit casual and "fally" look.
But is it versatile enough to warrant a purchase or should I be looking at something else?

I'm thinking it can be worn with any plain or striped dress (or small checkered) shirt as well as more casual button down shirts.
For trousers I'm thinking dark blue jeans. What about chinos, cavalry twill, corduroy, flannel?

Grey is more versatile than some on here would like to think, but given what you currently have, I would probably be after a F/W navy jacket before that.

Hi, I was not very clear, I Do have a navy blazer aswell but I consider it all year wearable. So with that in mind, Do you think this is a good next item or should I stick to maybe a solid medium Grey blazer?

The only solid medium grey blazer I've ever seen that worked for me had a textured, twill fabric with a slight heathered fabric, patch pockets and other subtle casual features. Otherwise, grey ends up looking like an orphaned suit jacket. I really like the grey with blue over plaid that you posted. That is ideal with jeans and more interested than a Blue Blazer and jeans. It would also look good with white or an off-white neutral cotton jean.

Do you think it would also look good with chinos? What colors work beside jeans blue and off-white?

I've seen guys wear a similar jacket (dark blue overplaid on grey background) with pearl grey (light grey flannels) and it looks smart. The key is that you need good contrast between the grey in the jacket and the grey in the trousers. If there isn't enough contrast in the greys it usually looks "off".

As far as chinos, my personal opinion is that chinos will work but stick to the lighter shades of beige and avoid the ones with a greenish, golden or brownish cast. They introduces another uncoordinated color.

Also, stick with light blue (oxford cloth, end-on-end) chambray, washed denim) or solid white shirts.

If you want a tie, start off with a solid blue silk knit and a white cotton or linen pocket square.

This jacket makes a strong plaid statement. Keep everything else for a simple, modern look. No reason to make this hard.

If you do want to add a bit of color to this outfit, consider a burgundy sweater or knit polo with a white or blue shirt and the jacket. Burgundy mixes beautifully with neutrals and blues and is especially appropriate in Fall/WInter.

That sounds great, much appreciated I will probably order it unless I find something I like more. Another thing I like about it is that it's alpaca so it's a new wool fabric (for me) to spice things up.

After trying on another jacket (same cut but another fabric and one size bigger in thread http://www.styleforum.net/t/531174/sports-coat-fit-keep-or-return ) I decided to give this one a try.
I think this one looks much better but there is still some small crumbling going on in the side section at the level of the top button as can be seen in the three first pictures.

I don't know if I'm being anal about it, but do you think it can be tailored or should I just return and forget about it, or live with it? I really like the jacket and everything else is good from what I can tell.
