if you have to go linen for your wedding, at least avoid patch pockets and other casual features. The second suit (golden) has a better cut for the occasion. The ideal would be something like the second picture but in Blu

You can try the Brooks Brothers Downtown. They have quite a few cotton suits available, they may not all be in the store but they can order them...and they are total pros who can give you the fit and tailoring you need:

Wedding bowtie question. So my bride and I are getting married at an afternoon outside ceremony in upstate NY. I'm comissioning a blue custom 2pc SB suit (one button) in Dormeuil mohair suit. I'd love to get a 3pc, but it's going to be the middle of July, and I'm trying my hardest not to sweat like crazy. Anyways, my question is this:

My bride wants me to wear an ivory (cream) bowtie that is also textured with lines in the same color. First, I'm wondering if this is an okay option, and secondly what colored shirt would you wear - or does it have to be white? She wants me to get a light peach shirt to match her dress, but I'm not sure if that's a smart move. I mean, our wedding is going to be a little on the casual side since it's outside in the garden. But I don't want to look back at my pictures and look like a clown or something. I'm also wearing lighter brown shoes, these may change, but for now I'm going for brown; again in the interest of the garden wedding. I like the way bowties look, and I know since I'm wearing a stoller/lounge suit, I should probably wear a long tie.?.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Oh, either way, I'll be getting the shirt made most likely by Carl.

Nothing wrong with a bow tie per se. However (as you will have discovered by reading this thread):

- NEVER try and match the bride.
- Do not give the bride too much influence over what you wear. Self-stripes in neckwear are rarely a good idea. Ivory bow ties during the day are virtually never a good idea, unless you're an Oxford student off to an exam.

Now, with an informal summer wedding, you may want to consider a pastel, neat print. Something like this:



Shirt can be white, or perhaps white collar, light blue body. I understand you are concerned about a three-piece in the summer heat, but with a two-piece suit, there's a lot of shirt between the bow tie and the button. You may want to consider a linen waistcoat - this will wear cool enough. Consider this image from the Good Taste thread:

I'd suggest avoiding the light brown shoes with a navy suit. At least go to medium brown.

"Mac" might be a good compromise with your bride.

I'm having my groomed wear the same colour suit, but choose it themselves. Do you think they should be solid colour, or will a subtle pattern still work. They will all be in grey suits. We have not yet decided between charcoal or medium grey. My brother in law is asking about a subtle pin stripe or check. I worry we might lose the coordinated look.

Pin stripes are for business, not a wedding. Checks can look weird on a suit IMO unless it's full on Prince of Wales or a country suit, neither of which would really be appropriate at a wedding.

Stick with solids.

Charcoal is more formal than mid-grey, and more people are likely to already have one, but either is a good option. Mid-grey could especially work well if it's a summer wedding.

And don't worry that everyone will look the same--everyone's suits will be sufficiently different I am sure. Besides, you can always just buy them all nice but different wedding ties.

I was looking at that picture the other day, and I've decided that I like that type of look better than a matching 3-piece suit. I believe I saw a Charles Tywhitt linen waistcoat, but I'm not sure about their quality. I'd love to have a really good one made, if possible, in the older "lower opening" style. But if I can get one OTR that's good quality, then of course that saves me some dough!

Thanks, unberlragazzo for the links. It's funny, I showed her the second link and she did like the Mac without me even prompting her. I just want to look as classic and put together as possible. I'm spending a lot of money on the suit because of this, now I guess I have to sell these Harris Balmorals I bought a month back. They're still brand new as I wasn't going to wear them before my wedding day. They also looked much darker on Barney's website than they do in person. Oh, well, ebay here I come... I guess I can post them on SF as well.

I think an ivory tie is for a tuxedo, not a suit. Do not go with a peach shirt to match ....you and your bride are not a vaudeville act. Also, if you sweat it will show up more than if you wear a white shirt. I think light yellow ties look nice with blue suits, especially in the summer.

Apologies in advance if I've gone into too much detail, but it's kind of necessary to build a mental picture. At the moment I'm unsure of the shirts and pocket squares for my groomsmen, as I would like theirs to be different to mine so that my suit stands out a bit from theirs. Any advice that you would have, particularly regarding the shirts and pocket squares would be greatly appreciated.

I will most likely will get the suits for the two groomsmen and myself made to measure via http://www.institchu.com/ as unfortunately with a house on the way my budget doesn't extend to three designer suits, even OTR ones. At least this way I can get the details of the suits exactly how I'd like them (materials, linings, lapels, etc) without paying a fortune. It's not going to be the most formal wedding ever, so a dinner suit isn't necessary, but I would still like a few little touches with our suits to set us apart from our guests. My inspiration for the suits is actually Sean Connery's grey three piece from Goldfinger, albeit with a few differences. We're in Australia, so November here is late spring. My fiancee's dress is ivory and her bridesmaids will be in lavender, so I'm trying to keep the theme of lavender/purple. The bridesmaids dresses are the same colour as this:



I've decided on three piece suits in a grey pick and pick (sharkskin) like this:


IMHO it's more interesting than a solid grey and the fiancee was all against a nice glen plaid like Sean Connery wore. I've decided on notch lapels, button two jackets, single vents, ticket pockets, functioning cuff buttons and flat fronted trousers with side tab adjusters to avoid wearing belts. The jackets and waistcoats will be lined in a dark purple, the back of my waistcoat will match the purple lining, but the groomsmen will have grey. I figure since there will likely be warm weather, the jackets will come off and with a waistcoat the three of us should stand out amongst the rest of the riff raff at the reception.

I was going to get our shirts MTM from institchu, without pockets or a placket , I was thinking of either the palest possible blue, or palest possible lavender for the groomsmen and plain white for myself. My fiancee feels it's important for my suit to stand out from the groomsmen, so we thought a slightly different coloured shirt would help. I'd prefer the light blue, but she'd prefer the lavender. I guess keeping the colour palette limited to grey and purple/lavender is a good idea, but I think it might be too much.

As for ties, I was hoping to add some texture, and since it's not a terribly formal wedding, I was leaning towards dark purple silk knit ties (Connery wore a navy blue silk knit with his grey three piece in Goldfinger), although dark purple grenadine ties would be nice too. I'd really like us to have pocket squares, as it's something I've always wanted to wear one with a suit. I was going to have a plain white square to match my shirt, and for the boys I was thinking of dark purple go with the tie, maybe a paisley or a gingham? Since I'm new at this pocket squares business, I'm really struggling to find the line between too boring and too distracting.

Shoes will be black, something plain like derby shoes (bluchers).

I think you're on the right track. As to distinguishing yourself from the groomsmen: why not have a coloured (lavender?) linen waistcoat? Also, you can do interesting things with boutonieres, as long as you don't go overboard. Pocket square: white linen is never a bad idea. Shoes: black Oxfords.
