i agree with that in some respects, but the blue lightning/electricity bolts were laughable, literally, i was laughing, and in some scenes the aliens are very clunky and look like giant plastic action figures rubber suits. which they probably were. but i write that off to what they had available, and i didnt mind at all. i wasnt watching it for effects.

I'm with hb - practical effects trump digital effects more often than not, and Aliens had some great effects. The battle between Ripley in the fork lift suit and the Mama Alien is epic.

in stitches, you were endurable before because despite your thousands of posts at least you contributed nothing. But now you're contributing negatively, and that's another matter entirely.

Who laughs at Aliens but goes into Taken 2 expecting it to be a good movie? The kind of person that enjoys Prometheus.

i will agree, bad/obvious CGI is far worse than out dated practical special effect. hand down.

first off, i am slightly offended at your unnecessary and underhanded insults.

i did not laugh at aliens. i enjoyed it. i merely stated that,

1. it made me appreciate the original film, more than i had.

2. specifically the blue lighting made me laugh, as that effect in present times can be done so much more effectively. seeing the old school effect was funny.

when i say i expect to enjoy taken 2, i simply mean that it will probably have a lot of very enjoyable fighting scenes, and some solid liam being liam action. i do not expect it to be a great film, but it will be a good movie in the sense that a pop song that will be forgotten in 2 months, is a good song, even if may not be great music, per say.

the same goes for promethius. i though the visuals were fantastic, and the plot was acceptable enough for me to enjoy it. i would not say that it will be a classic like the original alien film, it has nothing new in terms of filming that makes it stand out, and the story was just a story.

i am sorry that i am able to enjoy entertainment, that is what movies are after all, despite their flaws. it would suck to be so critical that one can rarely enjoy a movie.

anyhow, i never really had any beef with you, nor do i now. im not sure why you decided all of a sudden to take that jab. if you being tongue in cheek, or just joshing, i apologize for mistaking your intent.

It's impossible to respond to this succinctly so I'll just leave it at this: adding artistic pretenses to crap doesn't change anything, but it will make people kid themselves and say they enjoy something simply because the artistic pretenses make them feel as if they're supposed to. That's how HBO makes money, why people debate about whether There Will Be Blood or No Country for Old Men is better, and where hipsters came from.

And you really shouldn't be offended. I'm an anonymous Internet forum member and I'm only impugning your taste in movies (and the fact that you post way too much and it's really annoying). But for all you know I'm scrawny virgin typing this on a keyboard covered in dandruff, which taking into account the average SF member wouldn't be a bad guess.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. Great film streaming on Netflix. I'd seen it before but it had been a long time and the newer print I am watching makes it look a hell of a lot better.

im not exactly sure what you mean, and to be honest, arguing over music and movies as to what is "better" is pretty much a fruitless effort, as these are both highly subjective areas.

but, continuing using these examples, when i turn on the radio and hear starships, by niki manaj, i enjoy the song. it is fun to listen to. after 1 year, what is the likelihood i will listen to it even again? slim to none, outside of a nostalgic evening on youtube with friends. what are the chances that should that happen i will actually still like the song? 50/50 at best id say, based on past experience.

why is that? i think, because much of what we enjoy for entertainment is greatly influenced by societies interests at that time. certain beats, certain song flows.... very similar to humor. many many comedies do not stand the test of time, simply because what is funny, and especially what is cool, is almost always changing.

that being said, it is very easy to understand, at least in my opinion, why one could watch a movie like taken, or taken 2, enjoy it greatly, and never have any desire to watch it again, and possibly not even like it, if re-watched. its just simple, easy, cheap, but enjoyable, fun/entertainment. but it is by no standards, great cinema that anyone would feel the need to pass on to, say, the next generation. all the cultural pretense would be lost, and it wold probably just be lame. that does not mean, that in the here and now, with that pretense built into present culture, it is lame now.

now, maybe for someone who is entirely detached from all the pretenses, and pop culture phenomena's, what they do or do not enjoy is always subject to the same set of paramaters, and good is good, and bad is bad, period. and maybe that is what separates us. but i think neither of us is right or wrong. in the end, its all about being entertained, and we all have the right to form, consciously or not, what it is that entertains us.

also, im not really "insulted" per say. maybe slightly. but i did want to engage you in conversation, and i think that to that end, i succeeded.

i dont really care what, or who, you are in real life. and if you have dandruff, you should consider a new shampoo, maybe head and shoulders, or even the prescription stuff if it is really bad. i just am not a fan of unnecessarily making derogatory comments about other posters, with no context of friendly banter. i understand though, i am in the far minority around here in that regard. after all, whats the point of the internet if you cant ***** slap the next dude, with nary a consequence.

as to whether or not my posting a lot is annoying, that is an old argument. and there are people on both sides. not too different than the split in whether or not your often negative, and stubborn attitude is annoying, or weather or not you are one one of the brightest and most intelligent posters around here. or both. either way, they are pointless arguments, each person is entitled to their opinion, and it is irrelevant to this conversation anyway.

all told, i have enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, this conversation. :)

fun action flick with out dated special effects? sure. but the original one wins. far and away for me.

The first is a better movie, but the second is a hell of a lot of fun and a pretty damned good action movie. In the opinion of this ex-EFX supervisor the EFX hold up very well.
