Filson Coats

It really sucks what Filson is doing. I remember a Filson rep telling me they would never make camo clothing and they always prided themselves by making all their products in the USA. blah blah blah

In a few years they will be just like everyone else and probably market all the classic workgear in Europe and Japan while only offering us cheap knockoffs.

I'm glad I got my Filson when I did.

I have always had a fondness for traditional, rugged, made in the USA clothing. Heck, for that matter, most of the Carhartt stuff (for work) is made out of the country now. When I find a mad in the USA label on anything anymore I practically fall over in the store. Don't get me wrong, I like to see ppl. in developing countries get jobs. I'm sure they also work hard, but enough is enough. Filson?

That's just sad.

I'm looking at the same jacket (Tin Cruiser). Did you get it and how did it work out for you? Any comments on sizing?

Just because it says made in the USA doesn't mean that it was really made here. They can ship the garment back here from parts unkown and then sew the tag on here and that counts as "made in the USA"

I've seen the filson factory, and it's a little too big to just be smacking on labels.

I own the Cruiser. It's a cool jacket, but I wear it so rarely that I feel like it is never going to break in. It's as stiff as a board with waxiness. Great for rainy days though. 100% protection from the elements.

I have a Filson jacket that used to belong to my grandpa. It is either the Double Logger jacket or a very similar older model, but in a yellowish khaki (not my favorite color). It's probably around 40 years old. Except for some stains, it does not look very worn (and my grandpa must have worn it a lot, because he worked outdoors in environments where you actually need garments this rugged)

It is definitely a layering shell. You don't really want that cloth, especially the stiffer double layer, next to your skin. The cloth is still very stiff after years of wear (comparable to raw denim, maybe a bit less stiff, and obviously thinner fabric).
I'd go for the first jacket.

iamaloser, not speaking on Filson in particluar, but about the comment for supporting brands made in the USA. Brands that are 'made in the USA' are not often made here, but finished here.

London: I was originally refering to work wear type clothing, like Filson and Carhartt. I realize games are played with the Made in the USA label, but traditionally workwear was made here for "real".

Just received my Tin Cruiser. My first impression is that I'm very satisfied. Fit and styling are both to my liking. The fabric is close to thick wax paper in texture and feel. I'm a little worried about the smell though; a sickly-sweet caramel odor. Does it fade?

I'm not big on posting pics of myself on the internet. Give me a day or two, I may make an exception. I will say I'm 6'1" and wear a 39 Long suit. I ordered the 40 Long Tin Cruiser. As stated earlier, the cruiser is one of the few Filson pieces that comes in chest sizes. FWiW: Tag says Made in the USA.
