^^^ Thanks a lot for calling and reporting back. That's not nearly as enticing as the $250 SC Bradley deal!

I would have bought a pair of PTBs and LWs at $335 for firsts, but not at $500.

I'm going to call another store. Maybe the upside is I saved $325 by their not being available.
EDIT: Called a second store. She was very clear on two things:
1. $499 is the sale price in retail stores; $335 is outlet price and would be for seconds.
2. Sale is limited to stock on hand. They can call around to other stores, but they won't be able to order from the factory at this price.
$499 is better than $575, but not enough for me to jump on it at this point.
I'm not sure how Furo's store is selling at the $335, but whoever lives near there should jump on them.

Thanks for looking into this. Unfortunately neither the burgundy shell or walnut calf (pebble grain) macneil were available as factory 2nds. I was hoping Edward could locate one or the other and have them shipped to me. Since they aren't available in the 2nds inventory, I just may pick up the 1st quality.

I am a bit worried that the spring 2012 catalog is listing walnut and shell versions of the macneil as MTO only.

FWIW, my size is 9E-9EE most cases, but the 5 last fits me better in 8.5EEE, but the ball of my foot feels like it should be an 8.

All of the Shells are now MTO (as are a few other styles). There is some stock on hand, but not much.

As this is the AE appreciation thread, I'd like to express my appreciation for a specific AE employee. I've been through many trials and tribulations discovering my best fit in the #5 last. I had occasion to travel to Southern California on business and visit the AE store at South Coast Plaza. That's where I met Abby Beck, the store manager. I told her that I had tried various PAs at Nordstrom without much success. After describing my issues (flat feet etc.), she suggested a pair of Superfeet arch supports. I was skeptical, but she fitted me with an assortment of PAs to demo the arch supports. I saw a huge difference in fit right away. I'm going to audition the shoes and arch supports this week to see if it all works out.

I was ready to abandon the #5 AE last as unsuitable. Abby may well have brought me back. And even if it doesn't work, the customer service was excellent.

I got so caught up in my enthusiasm, I forgot that I also have a question. The PAs are like 90% good fit. It's a little tight around the little toe. I've seen posts from members who have had their shoes stretched. Is this something you have done at the local cobbler's shop? Do any retailers offer shoe stretching? Thanks.

I would suggest you go on ebay and buy one of those shoe stretchers like I did. ( i think they were around $15). They are pretty easy to use and you don't have to go back and forth to the cobbler to get rid of that dimple that's causing you distress.

which color superfeet are you using?

So Ive been lurking for a while, and though I am, by all definitions, a fine shoe novice, I have been recently inducted into the ranks of the Allen Edmond's patrons with the purchase of 5th Aves. Beautiful shoe. However, I am currently in the market for another shoe, and Im eyeing the McAllister or possibly the McTavish even. They both seem to be fine shoes to me, and they appear much more svelte than the McNeil. Yet, I noticed no one really acknowledges the McAllister's styling as being impressive as a dress shoe. I hear everyone go on about the McNeil this, Strand that, McNeil this, Player such and such...And while I admit the strand certainly is a handsome model, and the Player has a certain wittiness about its styling as well, the McNeil's bulky construction doesnt appeal much to me in my search for a wingtip. Just wondering why no one seems too keen on the McAllister?

I find the McAllister to be a great looking shoe. Maybe the reason you do not hear much about that model is based on its contradiction. A full brogue, balmoral shoe. It is designed in a formal style, but with casual detailing. Just a thought. I would have bought them if not for the Tresanas.

easy_golfing, I am using the Superfeet 8810 (that's the Men's 3/4 insert for dress shoes). It's just the plastic arch support, no top cover or padding. Surprisingly, it feels OK. I'm just not used to arch supports yet.

I am also a fan of the McCallister (especially after seeing the display shoe in Merlot) as well as its offspring, the Neumok and McTavish. And I like it precisely because it's a brogue wingtip with closed laces. The Neumok and McTavish also throw in a little twist with the rough, unpolished upper. The mix of a formal shoe design with informal details like the broguing give the shoe some texture.

On the other hand, Derbies don't catch my eye except for something like the Player's Shoe. This seems to be a matter of personal style. If you like the McCallister, go for it.

And, yes, the Strand is a really awesome shoe.
