Drinking with the wife. She does not do Scotch and we've gotten about 15 cases of wine in since Thanksgiving week, so it seemed like the right thing to drink

Had to go to a late wake last evening for a friend's grandfather. Right before leaving it started to snow and turned the roads into ice sheets. We somehow found our way there after sliding around the road. The funeral parlor had to be on a large hill along a major road in town and just in front a pickup's wheels locked left and he proceeded to pinball down the hill. I've never seen so many emergency vehicles on one night. We got home safely and I counted my blessings.

Big one....

Friday night, had a friend up from Singapore, runs one of the big international PR companies, so took the chance to take some of my staff out for drinks with him. Given that there are only 2 international PR companies here, it is good for them to get to know other ppl in the industry that dont do things The Vietnamese Way (tm).

Got staff brutally drunk...sent them home on their motorbikes. Im a responsible employer.

Moved from there to a new bar called Prive. Went to the opening last week, and am friends with the owner. Nice place, and business seems to be coming along pretty well.

Lush followed. That place is getting too gay. NTTAWT and all that, but it is heading pretty quickly away from 'club on Ly Tu Trong Street' to 'gay bar'. Got hungry and moved over to sleazy hellhole bar Apocalypse Now where they have really good hot dogs. Some old dude mans the grill every night there.

Starting to get late, starting to get tired...head home. Did not realise how drunk I was til I started to ride my bike. GF equally trashed. Drive home very slowly.

Wake up feeling very very very very rough.

Threw up Apocalypse hot dogs violently. Felt better for it. Slept more.

Vowed to never drink again.

Went to meet the same PR guy from the night before. Have a very quiet breakfast. Shopping. Dung-the-tailor. Brazilian jiu jitsu class.

Break never-drink-again vow at Underground a few hours later. Went to pick up gf, then on to the 1 yr birthday party of a bar called Alibi. Insanely crowded, and in a whole year, they still havent worked out how to throw a big party. Readers of my rolls may recall the night a friend threw a party there and we ended up using the guy from the 24 hour minimart over the road as our bartender. - some kid running back n forth ferrying us beer. Their own birthday was plagued by the same problems, so we bailed and went back to Prive.

Place was empty when we arrived, but filled up with screamingly hot women about 30 mins later (meaning we had the best table in the place) when the club upstairs (Bounce) closed. I drank very slowly all night...token effort to appease my friends while sticking to my vow. GF was similarly subdued.

Q Bar had its 15th birthday as well, so went there after Prive closed. So so so crowded. Sat outside for a while, drank some water and bailed. Still, a lot of fun.

Heard later that the PR dude may well have hooked up with gf's friend, so that is an interesting development.

Sleep.

Lunch with gf's-sisters-ex. Nice guy. Like him a lot more than the current bf. He is trying to win her back...I think possibly successfully, but my gf insists otherwise. None of my business, so I stay out of it. Had some really nice Chilean wine over lunch. Followed that with a couple of glasses of some single malt he had there.

Massage with gf, her sister and friend after that. So good. Fell asleep. Found this really good place in district 5....Zach, remind me to take you there next time you are in town. They are so good. Costs four bucks.

Went out to this art shop afterwards, bought two paintings. Cost 1.5 mil - about $90. Originals too. I like them - but then I know nothing about art other than that I hated the giant eyeball-with-tiger-around-it painting my landlord put in my lounge room from day 1 and decided I cant look at it for another day.

Home. Hang paintings. Watch downloaded Ultimate Fighter episode. Read my book. Sleep.

/weekend.

Went to a MMA event last night. A guy I know from HS was fighting his first professional fight.

Superheavyweight class - 6'5" 255lbs. Win by KO 27 seconds into the first round... and he fights out of my old gym!

Friday Night:

Straight from work around 5pm, I head with a co-worker to a bar called Hamilton's right by my office. Solid crowd of Government workers, Catholic U. students and other people from the Hill. Meet with old friend of mine, play darts and drink pretty good beers (PBR, Rogue Ale).

Were meant to meet up much later with some girls in Georgetown, so we head up to Dupont to kill more time. Have dinner at Sesto Senso (pretty good Arugula salad) and another beer (Pilsner Urquell). Part ways with old friend as he's getting ass kicked by Graduate school and head with co-worker to Lucky Bar across the street. Second time I've been there and this time impressed with the clientele (first time I was border line black out drunk but was positive I was surrounded by AmJacks). Stay for a beer (Bass) and decide to quit waiting to hear from these girls we were supposed to meet and do our own thing.

HEad to The Reef in Adams Morgan and stick around at the rooftop bar. Nice crowd that wasn't rowdy at all. Proceeded to shoot the **** with some Israeli girls, the bartender/owner and some dudes from LA. Were graced with some free drinks and a mini danceoff. Finally hear back from the girls we were supposed to meet and head out to Georgetown around midnight. Go to Rhino Bar in Gtown and meet up with them till 1.30ish and head home (this portion of the story should be the highlight but sadly wasn't).

Cab ride home in suburban maryland (after taking metro, which one I forget) I manage to forget the directions to my house so a $25-30 ride costs me $50.

Saturday:

Roll out of bed around 2pm, pick up car from the metro. Nap until Ultimate Fighter Finale.

Thu: met with Dad after work at a dive bar in the financial district. Was going along nicely until the bartender offered to do shots with us. She was good looking enough that there didn't seem to be a choice. Proceeded to get drunk with Dad, bartender, other (smoking) Polish bartender, and some guy named Luis. 8pm (!) that part breaks up and I head up to some bar near NYU to meet as many friends there as I can drag out at the last minute. Ended up with a girl I've hooked up with off and on for...****, six or seven years now, and one of my college roommates' exes, who is still a friend. Amazed by the rock on her finger, lament the slow decline of many of my friends into married life 5-6 years out of college. Ease way back on the drinking and am relatively sober by the time we need to crash, about midnight.

Quick back story: last time I crashed with this chick, it was the night before I had a flight out of JFK at 8, to the DR. We got slaughtered the night before, I couldn't figure out how to set the alarm on my phone, and 10 days in the DR turned into 3 days in Trinidad and a week in the DR. No harm no foul, but didn't want a repeat.

So, set and double check the alarm on the phone. Get up and out by 6, a good hour earlier than I really needed to, but it was worth it. Met my buddy Rob at JFK and scored exit row seats for the four hour flight to Santo Domingo. We left NYC at 32F and gray, and arrived in the DR at 85F and freaking perfect. Cab to the hotel, grab a beer, and start looking to catch a guagua to the night's game. Guaguas are minibuses that serve as the public transport system down there. Wave down the guy that's hanging out the side of the bus, tell him where you want to go, and squeeze in. Thirty minutes later get pushed out the side of the bus. One dollar for the two of us.

Licey-Aguilas is the Yanks-Sox of the Ligua Dominicana. Baseball games there are nothing like they are here, aside from the stuff on the field. Blasting merengue over the PA system, cheerleaders, pep bands, dancing in the stands and all of it fueled by Rum and Cokes. Met an old friend Luis (not the same one from the night before) so had a few local guides helping us out. Box seats behind the plate were $28 each from a scalper. Watched some dude named Derek Lee pitch a shutout for Aguilas, Luis' home team so my adopted team. Huge freaking party, I'm hooked.

After the game went with Luis and one of his nephews to a local bodega with live merengue and bachata. Fell in love with one sexy Dominican woman after another. It seems that girls dress to impress, and expect guys to comment on it--hi, mami! with a smile and a look in the eye and you get a gorgeous smile in return, and more if you want it. These people party and drink all night and try to figure out how to pay the rent in the morning but are happy every step of the way.

Wake up early Saturday, decide to chill in the main square in Santo Domingo for a while, soak up some greasy eggs and atmosphere and fresh juice and cigars and smile at the pretty girls. Grab a guagua out to Boca Chica, which turns out to be a pretty crappy beach, so catch another guagua out to Juan Dolio, where we're supposed to meet Luis for more debauchery. Fortunately Juan Dolio is a better beach because the punk never showed up. Rob and I sat out on the beach until late at night drinking more Rum and Coke and eating great local food and generally having a great bonding experience.

Sunday morning Rob wakes up early to go dive from Boca Chica and I hit the beach. Confronted there by a guy who I vaguely remembered from the night before and one of the woman with him who I also vaguely remembered from the night before, and wasn't too proud of myself. Rob came back, timing wasn't going to work for his dive because we had to get to Santiago for another ball game. Sit on the beach until about noon then back to Santo Domingo. Can't get a straight answer out of anyone about where or when there might actually be a game, so end up sitting around drinking and continuing to smile at the parade of beautiful women that come through Parque Colon. He goes in early (not feeling well) I go out dancing for a while and make some nice acquaintances. Bed at 2, wake up at 3:45, flight back to JFK and the cold gray northeast at 6.

Saturday night, remembered by chance that I have tickets to Yo Yo Ma.
Went to the Symphony Hall wearing my best Dior suit.
Yo Yo Ma was wearing black balmorals that I could not identify, perhaps they were custom made, quite pointy and did not look English.
Oh yea he also played some National Geographic sounding music on ridiculously big violin which he was holding between his legs and hugged it while making quite loud sounds with his mouth.
I would much rather prefer him playing something more traditional and really stop all his antics with Jurassic violins and play appropriate size instrument for a change.
