Woman shot in road rage incident on I-465

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Road rage is a problem police, counselors, and driving instructors are talking about. The latest example of it in Indianapolis was at 1 a.m. Thursday morning.

A man shot at a car driving in the southbound lanes of I-465 near 56th Street on the east side. A passenger inside the car was hit in the stomach.

"It's being reported by the driver of the vehicle that it was some sort of a road rage incident they were exchanging looks and talking back and forth as they were driving down south on I-465," said Sgt. Anthony Emery of Indiana State Police.

Police can only describe the gunman as a bald, white male driving a green Chevy Lumina.

22-year-old Alnetta King is in good condition at Methodist Hospital.

State police said they're seeing more drivers going into a rage on the road.

"They're so used to just flying into a rage; maybe they're angry most of the time and not even aware of their anger; and they're just before they're thinking about it reacting, doing something that is either threatening or actually physically violent," said Peter Wiethe of Community Health Network.

Even driving school instructors are talking with their students about road rage and how to avoid it.

"We remind them that when they sign for their license they agree to a lot of things that they're not aware of; that they agree to act responsibly in the automobile even though they may not have read that, they do agree to be responsible and be mature in their driving when they're in their automobile," said Don Gross of AA Indiana Driving School.

Here are some tips for avoiding road rage:

Don't tailgate.
Don't make inappropriate hand or facial gestures.
And avoid eye contact with aggressive drivers.

I'm just going to jump in now, but I think the important thing is that the rule should be symmetrical. Either we permit people to comment on it, both positively and negatively, or don't permit comments at all. As it is, it seems we will effectively permit positive price comments (ex, "great deal", "I wish you had that in my size", etc) but it appears we won't permit negative price commentary ("ripoff", "cheaper here", "try ebay"). Whatever the final rule is, it should be symmetrical.

Also, authenticity issues should always be fair game.

These are tips for hopefully not escalating it once it's already happening. The most common cause I see of "road rage" is causing someone to be stuck going slowly, usually by going slow in the passing lane (which is illegal, at least in this state). I'm working on theories involving male dominance, competition, general feeling of powerlessness, or just plain going crazy from being stuck going slow all the time. But most people, IME, could avoid setting off rage in the first place just by keeping up with traffic and staying out of the passing lane if possible.

One time I set off some douche's rage by, I guess, going along with his forcing me to cut him off. I was trying to get out of an exit-only lane (I had just merged onto the freeway) and he was racing me, trying to block me from getting over (which is illegal, failure to yield). When I finally did get over in front of him he kept slamming on his brakes, swerving so I couldn't get into another lane, etc. I called the cops and took the next exit but if I weren't a reasonable person I'm sure some violence could have ensued.

I kind of think that if behavior like that can be proven, the person's car should be summarily burned.

Why in God's name would he block you from entering the highway? Obviously the person has some major issues.

I'm not directing this at j at all because he was dealing with an a-hole who was racing to block him off but some drivers don't know how to merge. These are the ones going the exact same steady speed as you even as their lane is disappearing. Unless you can phase shift we can't occupy the same space so speed up or slow down you

Slow drivers in the passing lane, I will pass and not give them the courtesy of a turn signal as I get in front of them.

Actually, from my observations and experience this is one of the common trigger points -- people who are determined not to let anyone enter their lanes or change into their lane ahead of them and will speed up to prevent it.

I'm trying to master that praising-and-bumping your own thread thing that has become all the rage in B & S, but I'm too lazy to create another username.
