Good stuff. He was voted Street Food of the year. He's an institution. I like it spicy, and you have to really push him to make it that way, however. Berekat also has a great kebab plate--the salad is delicious and goes perfectly with the meat and rice. Only decent Mexican in the city are street types--there's a good cart on 96th and Broadway on the UWS; they come out at night for all the delivery guys. Besides that, the Mexican food in Spanish Harlem is pretty good, and I've had some great tamales in Jackson Heights. Chinatown, you really can't beat New Green Bo, esp. for the price. Sripraphai in Jackson Heights has phenomenal Thai food. They've also managed to expand without compromising their quality. Dimple on 30th betw. Broadway and 5th Ave. seems to have gone the way of best-kept-secret-turned major business, sadly. sigh

Sounds like an urban myth. Those carts are, however, all owned and leased out by the same guy...

If you are standing in the line for platters on 53rd and 6th (usually 20min-1hour) then you are an idiot. The cart across the street is owned by the same people and there is no one in line there....

I personally like Kebab Gardens kebab plates much better than Bereket. Bereket was good the first time I went there but now I realize that it sucks. The meat is tasteless and the place is too expensive. 12 bucks for kebab on plate half the size of a normal plate?

Kebab Garden is on 1st and Saint Marks Place....

8 dollars for two skewers and much more rice, and a bigger plate. The lentil soup is also half the price then Bereket. The meat tastes better. And the 1 dollar Snapple bottles are much better than 1.50 Poland spring bottles.

I have tried the Dosa Cart - it was decent enough. IMO, the dosas at Saravannas(26th and Lex, NE corner) are better - paper thin and with really spicy chutneys/sides. They also have a dosa that is made to be thicker with really hot peppers mixed in.

Can't believe I forgot the Aaron Sanchez place around the corner from Katz's. I can't remember the name right now, but it's a great value.

Nyonya-Malaysian place inexplicably in Little Italy. Absolutely amazing if you are an adventurous eater-the Crispy Golden Fried Squid is one of the best dishes I have ever eaten; especially when washed down with their fresh cocconut or watermelon juice. Watch out though-no credit cards.
