I apologize if it comes off as gloating. I was simply responding to the 1/2 price day posts that preceded mine. I , in fact, knew from the day I bought them that they were that price because of the discount. Sorry if you find offense.

NOS fifties sunglasses:

And a pair of silver-gilt cufflinks, with the old-style (pre-1937) lion from the Norwegian nat'l coat-of-arms. I'll use some acid to strip the worn gold away.

Best thing, though: A Jacob Prytz for Tostrup silver-gilt and painted enamel brooch, around 1915. Perfect late Jugendstil:

So tonylumpkin, did you ever go back? I find it odd if you still haven't. and if you did go back, I find it odd that you didn't find anything else good

I was waiting to answer this until I was able to follow up on the suggestions made by several people. I went back to the same store the next morning and there was nothing there of note. Just to be sure, I went back again yesterday and again nothing to get excited about. The other suggestion that was made was to check other branches of the same store to see if they may have gotten any items from the same donor. I wasn't able to do that until today because they are in other parts of town. It appears that the store I have frequented is the cream of the crop as the other ones had very poor pickings in the menswear departments. We did however find a great buy on a very nice down comforter. Exciting,no?

O f course it will be washed, and we use it inside a duvet cover.

I found a thrift store in the area that is (unfortunately) having a closeout sale - $1 for all clothing in the store. Thought I might dig something up, but it turned into a bonanza. The whole place was basically filled with jackets - not sure if they already had a sale on other stuff that cleared it out or what.

From l to r:
1) BB dark grey herringbone suit;
2) BB light grey w/subtle navy plaid suit;
3) brand new Oxxford jacket - still has the stitching on the shoulders for a new jacket, whatever that is called (seems like wool with some silk or linen, though not sure they make such a blend);
4) mid grey, heavy wool Polo for Saks suit w/ticket pocket (this is my favorite);
5) Paul Stuart navy blazer;
6) Oxxford dark blue w/black plaid sport coat;
7) BB grey w/subtle maroon plaid suit.

Total damage for these was a cool $7; also paid another buck for a box full of wooden hangers. Oh, and the jacket lying in front of the others I got for half off ($3) two days ago - it is red and perhaps a light taupe color Zegna, seems to be cotton but I'm not really sure.

I had to leave behind a lot of quality stuff, and I had several disappointments that looked good at first - a Zegna for Louis Boston suit, which appeared to be about a 42 but turned out to be cut for a 300 pound man with a weird downward angle on the jacket and approximately 46 pants, and a Hickey Freeman jacket with working buttonholes, but which ended up having ungodly (and unalterable) short sleeves.

Great day!

Nice stuff there. I would have probably left some of the BB stuff there but the other stuff is top notch.

Thanks to you both. I would have left the Brooks Brothers as well but they were all suits, all were clearly from the same closet, and all fit me perfectly - won't need any alterations at all. As a poor student, this is a major step forward for my overall wardrobe - I can wear a respectable, albeit not top of the line, suit, but need not worry about ruining it since it cost exactly $1. It's tough to drop the hundreds of dollars that a new, altered suit costs and then have to live in fear of the single misstep that can destroy the whole investment in one fell swoop, so those $3 bought a whole lot of peace of mind!

^Nothing at all wrong with a BB suit. It's certainly beyond anything I had as a student, and I wear them now with no ill effects.

Terrific finds usaa. All the better that they are things that you can use and enjoy yourself. I originally started thrifting to outfit my oldest son for his first sales job out of college. It wasn't until later that I figured I might make some money out of this and started looking more at flippable items and passing over things that, in the past, I would have been happy with for my own purposes.

Found this Oxxford charcoal pinstripe this weekend. 2 button and if I'm reading the date correctly, less than 4 years old. Its a 42l so my son may or may not be getting a very nice suit. You can't flip 'em all.
