Isn't Portland like the whitest city on Earth?

It's a very white, ugly, and unshowered city, man.

So, you were one of the few non-white?

Yeah- I caught some static from a lot of whites for the color of my skin, but it comes with the territory. I drank chocolate milk, the kids would say "Hey, look at ****** over there drinking milk to match his skin!" I tried drinking vanilla, then they'd just say "Hey, ****** Doug is trying to change his skin color by drinking vanilla milk!"

You fight through adversity and just come out the better man, I say.

Think of what the Oriental kids had to drink.

Zing!

Is there still a racist-skinhead element, or are they all 7-Eleven clerks and cops now, and everyone else is living the Portlandia dream?

I've heard it's still the heroin capital of the US, so I guess the underbelly is still pretty seedy.

Seriously, it's one of those cities I always see being presented as all hip and trendy but isn't it really, really white? And of course, they all think they're liberal and full of diversity?

Its hip because there are a lot of weird people there. They open up random stores. Lots of smelly homeless and street kids. lots of pervs too. just a weird bunch of degenerates.

You do need to be careful about which streets you turn down at night, and you couldn't pay me to go through Chinatown after sundown.

Was I the only person confused by the phrase "offered a job in Portland"?

I didn't think they actually had jobs there.

as has been said- hippies, yuppies, weird people, hipsters, etc... but not to any degree you'd be unfamiliar with coming from vancouver (BC) OP. There aren't a lot of SF-approved, professional young people/establishments like you'd find in more global, stylish cities; which is partly why I'm not really a big fan of the urban northwest (i'm from the rural part). Really the only thing I like about going to seattle or pdx on the weekends is the greater food options, I try to avoid most of the inhabitants. If I had to live in a city, I'd prefer to go all the way and choose tokyo, singapore, nyc or london; not some half-way suburban sprawl like pdx with its meager downtown.
