Thanks for taking the time to post this, I'll give it a try and report back on results.

Good luck, just condition, let dry and buff. Then a light layer of wax, buff, another small layer buff... do this a few times. They should hold up better.

Use renovateur for conditioning. I think it works best on shell.

Actually bloom occurs when moisture becomes trapped in the waxes and oils. Think of the white ring that appears under a sweating, cold drink set down on furniture. This is moisture trapped in the finish. Thus you don't want to "cloud up" the finish on your shells by using wax on them. If you want the amazing, 3-D depth of shell with its complex undertints, don't wax. Spit shine. Your kicks will eventually have the glow of an Old Master or antique Stickley table.

I like cordovan for shoes that are clearly casual - wingtip bluchers, NSTs - but tend to reserve them for drizzly conditions that I don't want to subject my suede shoes to.

I personally prefer a box-calf to Cordovan. For me, Cordovan only looks good with jeans, or casual pants. They aren't formal IMHO.

I spotted a guy wearing Alden Bluchers in cigar shell... they looked fantastic and matched his casual ensemble nicely.

I think shell cordovan is fantastic. It's easy to care for and has a depth that calf does not, IMO. Example: C&J for RL Darlton bluchers. Worn for something like 8 months with maybe one or two brushings along the way. Today I had some time so I applied Saphir Renovateur and then brushed it out. The results, I think, speak for themselves. Before:

xpost for posterity sake, again. I just found a pair of Allen Edmonds Bristol in shell, and the color was like...wow. I knew it was different than the standard burgundy. an old AE catalog calls is "Black Cherry". this really does look close to the #4 Cordovan I saw...maybe not quite as bright but they may just be due to age, etc. This is a vintage pair, hardly worn, but probably not touched in ages. here are some pics, next to pair of vintage Florsheim shell longwing in burgundy
