Food/gourmet publication - pls help

Guys,

I remember reading some time ago about "the world's best food magazine"; an American publication with a rather limited circulation. Published by a food writer in Vermont (I think?). It took a very "serious" approach to the writing and wasn't published monthly or bi-monthly but rather when the editor believed it was ready to go to print.

Any of the gourmets in this forum who can help me remember the name of this publication?

Cook's Illustrated.

That's a guess based on the location of the editor or publisher, Chris Kimball who is based out of Vermont.

PS - I'm a big fan of the shows America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country (is there a difference between the two?).

Many thanks - but I'm not entirely sure that's the one...this one looks too "commercial" for lack of a better word.

Apologies for changing my mind here but it could've been upstate New York....Trying to find the original article I read this in...hmm.

cook's illustrated is great at what it does and chris kimball is a financial genius, but i think you're talking about ed behr's newsletter ... "art of eating." much more writerly. another possibility would be john thorne's newsletter, simple cooking, but that has become so irregular i don't think it can really be counted anymore.

I think Cook's Illustrated would be worth its subscription price for JUST the product side by side's it does. Those are great.

it's a pretty amazing case study. they essentially write 3 stories over and over. but it's heavily reader-surveyed, he accepts NO advertising and they do little or no subscription discounting. and he's got more than a million subscribers. way to go chris!

It's really interesting b/c you read the magazine, and then watch the PBS show, and you realize it's incredibly obvious that it's the same guy doing it. Just a nerdy, passionate food lover.

nerdy, definitely. amazing thing about chris, though, despite the mr. peepers looks, he's a grateful dead freak who plays jerry garcia note-for-note on his guitar. funny guy.

Hey, my dad is the IT Manager and VP of a large national trucking firm. And comes home and brews his own beer and has been to over 1,000 Dead concerts, including the Gate crashing and Jerry's last show. People are deceiving. Goddamn hippies are everywhere.

dude. i know food publications. as i said before, the one you're looking for is Art of Eating by Ed Behr. that's the only one that fits the bill.
