It depends upon the quality of the hotel ... a minimum of $5 to a maximum of $20 per day.

To encourage good service, I leave a tip on a daily basis rather than at the end of my stay. It works.

I work in hotel marketing and can tell you that the maids appreciate the added income. They don't get paid well, but they do clean 3-4 rooms per hour. If everyone tipped just $2 per day that would give them an additional $12k/year.

Usually don't leave anything, but I know that my father has left a printer and office supplies earlier.
Obviously he doesn't travel with printers, and this time he needed to print out like 100+ pages, and buying a cheap $50 refurbished printer instead of going to the business room/copy shop and pay $50 for printing, he bought that cheap one and left it with a note for the maid.

Is this frowned upon? I mean, it might be useful to them, but it might also be junk they have to throw away because they already have a printer at home..

Obviously, if he left a printer in his hotel room, the maids didn't inherit it. Note or not, most hotels have policies that prevent them from taking stuff left in rooms. Like other phones and property left in a room, it goes to a "lost & found" box or closet somewhere until someone claims it. Better hotels will actually call or ship it back to the address used for registration/billing.
