Obviously, if he left a printer in his hotel room, the maids didn't inherit it. Note or not, most hotels have policies that prevent them from taking stuff left in rooms. Like other phones and property left in a room, it goes to a "lost & found" box or closet somewhere until someone claims it. Better hotels will actually call or ship it back to the address used for registration/billing.

I was serious, and he left a note saying that the maid could take it if she wanted to, so she wouldn't get in trouble with hotel policy and all that.

$2-3 per day, and I try to do it every day rather than giving more at the end of my stay because the maid can change from day to day.

Solid idea, if we all tipped our cleaning staff an extra 2-3 bucks per day the hotel owners could stop paying them altogether! The positive outcome you'd expect to see from this reduced overhead is a drop in prices.

Sadly, you would not. In fact it would set a precedent whereby the customer would forevermore be expected to pay their cleaning staff's entire salary.

Instead of owners accepting that running a service business means paying service staff, they constantly pay substandard wages and leave their customers to make up the difference. They could pay a livable wage and pass the cost + markup onto customers in higher set prices. Instead they leave it to individuals to pay their employee's rent. Some pay more, some pay less, some pay none. There is awkwardness and confusion about who you're supposed to pay and how much.

Everyone loses.

That's a long post to try to justify to others why you don't leave tips.
