It looks like a lovely little city. Has anyone been there? What's it like? Is it at all comparable with Portland in terms of activities, dining, arts?

I went on a second job interview while in College. I remember 3 things:

1. I flew up there on a toilet paper tube with wings. The pilot asked if we wanted anything to drink from the vending machine before closing the door and taking off.

2. After lunch my interviewer drove me around the town and asked if I wanted to stop at the 'mall' to ride the escalator which was recently installed. He was serious.

3. I saw Stephen King's house. yipee.

I declined further consideration before leaving town, but it did appear pleasant.

It's a pleasant town. I had a friend total a car there and while we were stuck there, everybody was friendly.

Closest thing to civilization in Northern Maine (or even parts of the Canadian Maritimes, if you ask me). There is nothing around for 2 hours.

With that said, I'll avoid it unless I'm loaded and can fly out on a whim. I prefer Portland more.

Freeport is also really nice. It's pretty close to Portland.

Bangor is quaint.

Portland is much better IMO because it's relative proximity to Boston means there are much more cultural and entertainment options.

gnatty: yeah, that is what I imagined. I think a vacation home in the Portland or Bangor areas would be a really ideal spot. That is, until I can afford a ranch in Livingston, MT.

+1. It's like a vacation spot for me to make the 15-20 min. drive from Portland.

Bangor is pretty remote and is not nearly as cosmopolitan as Portland and those towns in Portland's vicinity. Bangor was an Air Force town. Maine was a manufacturing state. Not a whole hell of a lot going on in this maybe 50,000 person town. Cold as a motherfucker too.

Bangor, aside from being the punchline to an AF joke, is the jumping off point for the North woods. After that you've only got are Greenville / Millinocket, or Presque Isle / Caribou way up in the County....

I've read too many Stephen King books to feel comfortable living in Bangor. Little towns like that are only for 2 day vacations, anyway.

+1. I'd stay clear away from any "special" people if I were there.
