The Louvin Brothers...
I think the predictors of poor taste are much more reliable than those for good taste. That is, bands like, say, Creed are a much better predictor of poor taste than a decent band is of good taste.
People who like to name-drop The Fall probably have only heard one song by them. They wouldn't know the difference between a Dragnet-era song from something from Hex Enduction Hour from a pick from The Marshall Suite.
I was just at Starbucks (just for a place to sit and play board games, I swear!), and they had a sampler CD of the major protopunk and new wave bands that are being name dropped here. It is officially as passe to assign any sort of cultural meaning to these bands as it is to the Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Sonic Youth, The Pixies, Pavement, etc. Throw them in the Starbucks bin. Time to dig up some new bands, people.
They had a Pere Ubu sampler there?
Maybe someday. Actually, most of your bands are safe and generally good indicators of taste...for now.
I would like to note that I own choice albums of The Fall's catalog on vinyl, 180 gram reissues where possible, not some $4 CD.
I'd say someone who listens to the Residents is definitely open minded, or under heavy barbiturates. Usually if someone listens to music that is obscure or avant garde, their taste is usually pretty good. I don't really know what I'm talking about though.
