This was like a scene from Jaws. I walked out onto my balcony and saw two huge dark shadows about 30 yards out from shore. They looked to be about the size of a small car each, and about 10ft long. The closest swimmer was probably about 20 yards away. They were moving so slow at first I wasn't sure what they were, but when they started to surface a little I could tell they were not a finned animal. I didn't have my binoculars handy, but they appeared to be manatee. Anyway, two swimmers spot them from the beach and everyone started running out of the water. Pretty cool.

North Miami Beach. Just moved here, actually. That's why I guessed manatees, they're pretty much the only marine life in this area that I could think of being that shape/size. I surprised the people could see them from the beach. Makes me wonder what else is swimming around down there.

I was in Crystal River on business last week. Three of them were right by the seawall. Really cool.

They're pretty amazing creatures and seemingly totally defenseless. Just big slow animals.

They say that sailors used to think they were Mermaids. I think Manatees are pretty awesome in their own way, but I also think those dudes had to have been at sea a long time. ~ H
