Yeah, I honestly didn't know the Bastille came out that long ago... I thought it was released in 2001 or so. Anyway, it's really not too tough to figure out the code... for older bags (like pre 2007 or so), the first two letters are a place location, and the first and third digit is the month, second and fourth the year. SO, SP1004 would be 10/04 or October, 2004. They changed it a year or so back, and I think now it goes by WEEKS and years... so 1038 would be like the 13th WEEK of 2008, or March. I've not bought LV much in the past few years, though, for the same reasons you mentioned... so I could be off. For older bags, though, the above mentioned pattern generally holds.

Some of the bags from my collection:

-Versace ecru canvas and black leather tote (S/S '07). One of the few non-garish things Versace has ever made; delicate material, but great size and comfotable on the shoulder.

-Dsquared herringbone wool and leather tote (F/W '07). Great detailing and materials; suprisingly good quality. This is probably my favorite, though I wish it were a little larger.

-Hermes Fourre-Tout canvas tote. No, it's not the holy grail Hermes leather, but it does have the excellent contruction, finish, and design that makes an Hermes an Hermes. Actually cost less than $500; this was before Hermes started charging $900 for a basic fabric beach bag.

-Gucci black signature tote. Fun vacation bag, low maintenance; would get more use out of if the handles were a touch longer. Logo is actually fairly discreet in person.

-Coach Gramercy line leather satchel. Made in the mid-to-late '90's; from one of Coach's now-discontinued premium lines that were made in Italy (rather than China, Mexico, etc.) Absolutely terrific bag, great shape and feel, substantial hardware. Very discreet, unlike most Coach products.

-LV Reporter (GM size). Practical, durable bag that adds a bit of variety to a basic casual outfit. Discontinued larger size; makes a great carryon. Was purchased secondhand in perfect condition from a consignment store in Zurich. Entered the world July 1999 (yes, I too speak Vuitton-ese

-Prada nylon messenger. Boring as hell, but goes with everything and is a great low-key bag. Purchased dirt cheap at a Saks outlet.

-Burberry mahogany check duffle. The only Burberry check I've ever cared for that is sadly now discontinued. Very subtle, nice leather trim; good made-in-Italy quality, 1000X better than the new Chinese-made Burberrys

designervalet, i really like that burberry bag you have, very subtle but classy indeed. Quite true about the difference in male and female, i think men can pull it off well in certain situations, plus i think they kind of went that direction in the mens department because it was selling. www.the189.com

Really liking the totes.

Going to have to get one in a navy canvas/dark brown leather me thinks.

I've got some more filson stuff coming, but everyone has already seen that a billion times. Good for basics, you know it will last. Anyone comment on small v medium duffle? Is the small too small? The medium is massive.

I like the Our Legacy messenger too.

It's on my cop list.

I remember that Versace tote! I had the same thought as you, "Wow... that's really nice and simple... hard to believe it is Versace." I ALMOST got one during the sales, but ended up picking something else up instead.

Nice item! If you ever decide to get rid of it, PM me.
