Black Shoe Suggestions?

I'm after some ideas on what type of blacks shoes there are out there

I'm after a pair which are dressy, would look nice with jeans for work, going out to at night etc... but not formal. I guess something between a formal pair of shoes and casual shoes...

Definitely trying to avoid the mono black converse type of shoe that's out there, unless it's on the dressier side.

Thanking in advance!

Brooks Brothers has a Pebble Grain Long Wing which I feel is a nice balance. I never see it online but I see it in some of the stores.

Given the choice I would avoid the black and go for a brown or cordovan.

Black plain toe bluchers (like Alden 990/9901 or AE Leeds) are pretty versatile, although I'd rather have them in #8. Most of the English brands sell similar shoes in calfskin and/or CG leather. In the US, Bates are really cheap (and from looking at them in the local army surplus shop, I'm guessing you get what you pay for).

Black chelsea boots or jodhpurs can span the jeans - to - dark suit range.

I doubt I'd ever buy black longwings but I don't really have anything against them either.

You give good advice. And though these are not the Black Fleece ones which I believe are made by Alden I just like them. Not sure why. Maybe it is a Thom Browne lemming thing?

In a mid-priced RTW shoe for the dual purpose that you describe, I would go with a three eyelet derby in a sleeker last, such as a Crockett & Jones Aintree:

Label King would say chelsea boots, and while I don't have any and probably never well, I have to say, they are probably ideal for the use you want to make of them.

Why Doc did not come along to suggest them I have no idea, I hope he has not been in a car accident.

I do not know. I am unfamiliar with the specific shoe. The Brooks Brothers are single soled.

How about these (Alden 2161 on the Aberdeen last, straight captoe blucher):

A good shoe that will last for decades if taken care of. Can't beat shell cordovan for durability. I picked em up for $180, but I also saw them a couple weeks ago on the Brooks Brothers website for $199
