ok, have a chance to get away with my wife for a few days, for the first time since we had kids. thinking

1. san francisco - but we will be going there for a work conference (with the kids) later on in the year

2. new orleans

some distant ideas

just go downtown to a hotel
memphis
nashville
kansas city

basically the idea is to have fun (maybe listen to music) eat good food, drink, walk around

any other ideas? any support for any of the above?

thanks

You are going without the kids? If so, then you should really focus on doing something your wife will enjoy. You get to travel a lot but this must be a rare opportunity for her.

Montreal would be nice, yeah. What kind of music do you guys like? I think Austin, Nashville or Memphis would be great for blues/jazz/R&B.

Have you been to Savannah, GA? Beautiful place and perfect for a romantic getaway.

Lawrence,KS.

It is in the eighties there currently, it has a pretty decent live music scene shopping etc. Also you could stay outside of town at a B&B somewhere. It isn't as touristy as the other places you listed so you wouldn't have as hard a time finding a place to stay. Plus spring break is coming up so a lot of the college kids will be out of town.

Is this Wm Burroughs town?

I would vote Nawlins, but have no idea what post-K city is like. SF may be a better bet. Santa Fe is nice. This is a refreshing spot out int he desert outside of Espanola (don't be put off): http://www.ranchodesanjuan.com/

I wouldn't go to Montreal in March (or anytime before May). The weather is hit and miss and you can end up in a snowstorm or -15 weather.

San Fran is a fine idea but since you'll be back and if it's only for a couple of days, I probably would do New Orleans for that sexier vibe. That said, I haven't been since before Katrina so don't know what it's like these days.

The other place I would bring my wife is Miami just for relaxing by the pool...
