Why should I buy a Mac??

Because Apple told you they're better than PCs and you're not smart enough/a big enough geek to use Linux.

What are you using the laptop for, and how did the last two fail?

I'm not using it for anything that is too intensive. From what I understand Macs are used by those in photography, movie making etc. Photography is something I am interested so I would like to take that into account when purchasing a laptop.

My first HP has malfunctioned in four different capacities, and my latest has issues with the power supply. I've heard Macs don't get viruses and I have been having trouble with malware and things on this current PC as well.

I'm not so technologically impaired that I wasn't aware of this. I hear all this bable about N-videa g-force something or others, and apparently Macs are superior in this regard...

I just bought one of the new aluminum MacBooks after using PCs all my life. To be honest, "the switch" does take a bit to get used to--until you realize how intuitive and simple the Mac OS actually is. After being conditioned to perform tasks a certain way on Windows, that is quite a shift. A few things that I like:

• It's fast. Really fast. I have the slowest MacBook (2.0Ghz), but I slowly realized that i didn't need to close any of my programs. OS X is designed for programs to run continuously.
• You can run windows on it. I just bought VMware Fusion, which allows you to run windows as a seperate "window" within the OS. You're also able to natively boot into windows if you choose.
• It's built like a tank. Compared to my plastic Dells, the MacBook's unibody structure is remarkably solid, yet thin and light.
• The huge multitouch trackpad is fantastic.
• EDIT: of course, not having to install anti-virus software frees up a bit of memory, contributing to the overall speed. (You still need anti-v if you plan on running Windows, of course.)

A few things that I don't like:

• No dedicated "delete" key. Yes, there is a delete key, but it works as a PC backspace. You have to press "Control-delete" to have typical left-to right delete functionality.
• The screen doesn't open to a fully flat, 180 degree position. Now I can't use my laptop in some positions.
• Only 2 USB ports, and no VGA or DVI output. With it's new mini display port, Apple makes you buy an adapter if you want to connect to an external display. (This is only for the laptops.)
• OS X isn't as customizable as Windows. This may be a plus for some, because it makes the OS simpler. (However, I may have not figured everything out yet.)
• Having to buy new--Mac--versions of software. This can be remedied by installing Windows for your old apps, but you still need a new version of Windows!

Off the top of my head, these are my general impressions. Also, note that I didn't list "high price" as one of my dislikes (popularly cited as a gripe--and rightly so). I bought the MacBook on eBay with the 25% Live.com discount (which is currently at 8% I think) and my 10% paypal coupon. I ended up saving $300 on a brand-new system!

Honestly, any newish computer can do photo editing. I cannot think of a reason a Mac would be better than a PC. In fact, I can think of some ways that it would be worse depending on the software you want to use, the configuration of your laptop, and what peripherals you want to use. That aside, if you are one of "those people" who cannot figure out how to stop being infected by malware/spyware/viruses - by all means - switching to OSX will probably help. There ARE a few malware programs, exploits, and spyware for mac/OSX though, just not nearly as many. And OSX isn't inherently more secure than Windows in most situations in which you are being attacked from an outside source. If you should choose to run windows on it, you will be just as susceptible to those things, if not more so, than any other windows user (false sense of security). The computer itself is not magical. It makes me sad when people flee from windows to OSX because of ignorance of how the internet works and how to not get viruses. But hey, there's not much I can do about it.

Apple actually takes a long time to upgrade their hardware.

They do not have superior video cards, they use the same one everyone else does.

Have you used both OS? I think it is safe to say you perfer Windows, what is your major reason for this preference??

(At the risk of coming off as a fanboy), as far as I know, this is simply not true. Although it has been demonstrated that OS X can be susceptible to viruses, none have shown up "in the wild"--yet.

I use a Mac because it's cuter than Linux.
