Should a cutaway collar be stiff in nature? or should it be soft?

My Charles Tyrwhitt cutaways are pretty stiff, but they look great.

Depends on whether or not the collar is fused or not. It's really a matter of personal opinion though. Most of my cutaway collars have stiff collars, but my purple label does not. Whatever you like should be the one you choose. I prefer stiff collars in general though.

The collar itself doesn't have to be too stiff when the collar stiffeners are removed. However, when the collar stiffeners are inserted, it should be (as expected!) stiff.
If a collar is not stiff and is not a button-down, the points of the collar will tend to curl up when you wear a tie. Also, I would think that the collar would tend to look a bit "crumpled" and untidy.

I'd like to revive this thread. I have a number of Charles Tyrwhitt ***** with cutaway and spread collars where the collar points are turning inward despite the collar stays.
Is this something that's inherent to fused collars or is there someway that I can prevent this from happening? There is advice on a related thread concerning the proper way to launder shirts to prevent this from occuring (http://www.styleforum.net/showthread...+points+curl); however, I have my shirts laundered by my dry cleaners. One of the posts on the cited thread states that starching the collars won't achieve the desired results and will only create additional wear-and-tear.
Any thoughts?

I have both stiff and more relaxed cutaways. I can get away with more relaxed collars with a more formal suit but a very stiff collar looks "uptight" with a more relaxed outfit, IMO.

It may have to do with fusing shrinking at a different rate than the outside material.
