Always one on the right for wallet. Two if you need symmetry. None looks a little effeminate as stated.

One back pocket on regular suit trousers, no back pockets on fish-tail trousers. A fish-tail back isn't going to be mistaken for women's trousers, so the lack of back pockets won't matter.

For some reason, no back pockets make the pants look unfinished. That's just me.

They are absolutely essential for practical reasons. I need somewhere for my wallet and I hate any bulges on thighs caused by using the side pocket so handkerchief as well.

Even if one is used two is far preferable for symmetry.

Lonneker, having started this where are your views to be read?

I never have my suit trousers made-up with back pockets. I like the cleaner look without back pockets. Also I don't really use the pockets in my trousers, except on the rare occasion for a handkerchief in one of my front trouser pockets. Wallet, keys and all the rest go in my coat.
