Odd I was just going to post in the other Quinoa thread. I was at Costco and they've started stocking organic quinoa so I picked up a bag. It says that its been pre-rinsed. Does it need to be rinsed again?

Also, any way of turning this into something sweet? I need a replacement for my morning oatmeal.

Ya, the Costco TruRoots quinoa is what I have, and find it a tad bitter when eaten plain despite it being pre-rinsed. I would re-rinse.

Maybe, but instead, consider adding a handful of slivered almonds to your oatmeal? It'll taste better and give you the same or better nutritional benefits as switching grains.

Can I just treat this just like rice pretty much? E.g. make up a pilaf or risotto? Or do people recommend completely different kinds of recipes for this?

Its texture is completely different from rice. It may work in pilaf-like things, but it'd be strange as a risotto, IMO.

My aunt makes a good tabouli salad with quinoa.

I think I can say, with all honesty, that the thought "this would be better with quinoa" has not ever entered my head. I don't know how this awful little grain became so popular, but I am glad you all enjoy it.

I can see what you're saying. The nutritional content is what I like best about quinoa.

You can add this to the list of things I've never thought.

I'm interested in it for health reasons - we tend to eat a lot of rices and pastas, have a tough time with controlling portions, and it would be nice to find a genuinely healthy alternative to sub in for casual weeknight meals.

Marketing. A "rediscovered" ancient grain the Egyptians ate! Has a good glycemic index. It sounds foreign. Has "big hit" written all over it.

It's still a starch, it's not some miracle food that will leave your turds polished golden.

I'm sort of ambivalent about quinoa. For every time I've had a good version, I've had five that tasted like a vegan health food abomination.
