A beer judge can identify discernible differences in the beers, but Joe six pack buys beer based on marketing.
Bud, Bud Light, and Heineken all use rice to add alcohol without adding flavor. Coors light and Miller Lite both use corn to do the same thing. Rice makes for a crisper, drier finishing beer vs a sweeter, smoother flavor with the corn. Both adjuncts are essentially flavorless, so the differences are hard to detect.
The movie Beer Wars is worth a Netflix rental. There is a scene where people in bars are given the opportunity to select their favorite beer in a taste test. It is hilarious.
