Interesting how vastly different the same word is in different countries. . .

Anyway, so it turns out I have eaten horse, despite thinking I had not. It also turns out, I find horse to be pretty good. And, I've eaten horse steaks many times.

Who else likes horse steaks?

I've had em, its ok. horses are kind of ****** animals so I don't really have any 'issues' eating them

i've had it, no big deal. It's ok, though really too tough to get good unless it has been slow cooked.

There was a really good story on Real Sports not too long ago about horse owners who sell their horses to "meat men" when the horse gets too slow to race. Especially sad when you see how they're put down. It's illeagal to do it here in the states, but Mexico and suprisingly Canada allow the practice.

Yes - too tough for me. It's fairly common to find horse meat in butcher shops in France.

Slopho the horses slaughtered in canada are shipped from the usa, slaughtered, then sent back to the usa. this is a slippery way the usa avoids humane animal issues and peta, etc
its all on google under equine slaughter usa canada

I really don't see the big issue with horse meat. These are huge animals with large quantities of meat, it would be a shame to waste all that when they die. . . so why not use it for food?

Also, the meat I've been eating that I was told was horse is pretty good, hasn't been overly tough.

This is how I feel as well. Never had horse steak (yet?), only once dried and cured.

Never have eaten it that I know of.

Is it tough like Venison ( dry and lean ).

Or tough like a cut of cheap steak. More like chewey and tasteless.

Does it taste closer to beef or the inevitable "Tastes like chicken?".

I would have no moral problem with eating it but I've never seen it on an American menu. Is it permitted to be sold knowingly in restaurants in the US?

As much as shell cordovan is beloved here on SF you would think there are some that would also enjoy eating horse as well as wearing it!
