Lighter shades of shell cordovan are hard to get, and I know that you are more likely to have to accept imperfections that would have been covered up with darker shaded shells. But would you consider the splotchy variations in the pictures below to be the kind of natural variation you have to accept, or is that more of a manufacturing failure?
I own a few pairs of shell, ranging from black to color 8 to cognac, and I don't mind marbling or differently shaded panels. But this kind of splotchiness gives me pause...
what do you think? Am I being over-critical? Is this the kind of thing one should just expect with bourbon or lighter shells? Or should I expect a little better from Horween shells?
