Biggest surprises: Ramsay's flagship resto fell out of the top 100 list, while still maintaining 3 Michelin stars. Of all his restaurants, only Maze made the list, at 91. At the same time, his protege, Marcus Wareing jumped up to spot 52. The Fat Duck keeps its high position at #2 despite the health scare earlier this year. Top US restaurant was Per Se at #6. Bit of a surprise, that it was that low.

Oh yeah, maybe the biggest surprise, Asian restaurants cracked the top 50. #20 and 45.

It's put out every year by Restaurant magazine, sponsored by S. Pellegrino. I got a link to it from Bloomberg. AFAIK, it only goes to 100. I'm sure they have a list that's larger, but I haven't seen it published. The list is actually called "50 best" but they had a link to all 100.

It's a little odd that L'atelier De JR gets on there 3 times for three different countries.

And the only Nobu on the list is UK?.. not Japan or LA?

Alinea is the only place I have been.

Service and experience made up for what I thought was very good but not great food. I'm also the farthest thing from an expert that there is.

There seems very few American restaurants.

Is our cuisine that bad?

The list is sponsored by a European company and most of the culinary world is still euro-centric. There are even fewer restaurants in Asia. There's a really good discussion about this in the thread from last year's list.

+1. I think the list is still rather accurate from an American standpoint, given what would seem like an obvious bias. The most surprising to me was not the lack of American places, but the fact that Per Se was only 6 and Alinea only 10th. But my commentary is only worth so much having been to zero of these places.

You're right Kwilk. I think the euro-centric bias is really more about cuisine than location. Obviously the top of the list tends toward Haute French and Molecular Gastronomy. There are a very few sushi and Italian restaurants, and one or two Indian and Asian.

From a North America perspective, I would not have been surprised to see:

le Bec Fin
L20
Nobu Malibu or NY, or Matsuhisa
SOMETHING from Canada

Oh, ok. That makes it all better. It's only a name in the broadest definition of the word.
