Why would a wealthy man buy a brand-name suit?

Vox - I think I follow that, but perhaps another one of them equations like in your multi-fold tie treatise is appropriate.

Do you like Renoir? Not a major piece, just something smallish for the bathroom?

Well, just add it to the cart, like StyleForum's beloved Sierra Trading Post.

@voxsartoria, don't be a wanker. I'm not indulging in fantasy. You can speak to people without belittling them - do you know that? A concept entirely lost on this forum.

I think that a lot of people have an idea of what it is like to be rich. These huge brands' biggest consumers are not the rich - they are people who are spending their entire paycheck for the bag, or the watch, or they're putting it on credit.

Honestly, what is a waitress doing with a Gucci bag? Most expensive items are owned by people who are buying them out of their means.

I'm quite fed up. I can't read a single thread without people taking jabs at one another, I'm not going to let it happen to me. I will not be insulted and say nothing.

Your fantasy is that rich people are frugal, like Warren Buffet. They are not. Overreaching is a fault that goes across all economic classes. It is a fault of human nature and not confined to those whose means are more limited than others.

As for belittling you, I apologize for making you feel that way. Nevertheless, my response to your statements can stand without modification.

Aside from the needless and inaccurate assessment, I take your statements on board.

I have a funny story. I should put it in the White Trash thread.

I think it is too personal. It has to do with a small Cezanne, cat poop and keg cups filled to the brim with cigarette butts. I'll just laugh about it to myself.

I know many wealthy people - I don't mix with them but need to talk to them because of my job - and I would say maybe 2 per cent wear bespoke, perhaps 10 per cent wear high end RTW suits and the rest barely care at all as long as they think they look okay.
But as far as cars, homes and holidays go they deny themselves nothing.
So my experience is very different to yours, although I don't know how many rich people you come into contact with.

We don't disagree. Rich people overreach on different forms of consumption than people who are not rich. When it comes to clothes and personal adornment, there is also a bit of a gender difference.

Your percentages indicate that slobs permeate all economic classes and that is also true.

We've gone over this before, many times. I was in a lunch meeting today. One of the guys there is third generation wealth. He often shows up at these Board meetings in shorts. Today, he had on chinos and a shirt with a pony.

His grandchildren, should he have any and should there be any family wealth remaining, will show up in the Slanket.
