Hello. I am wearing a fleece vest to work today, because it's weird weather - halfway between warm and cold, and can't decide whether it's raining or not. Classes have finished and all I've got is a couple of meetings with research collaborators, so shirt (Oliver Spencer), trousers (Pure Blue Japan), fleece vest (Patagonia - yes!) and sneakers (Onitsuka Tiger), plus a light waxed jacket if it rains when I'm cycling to and from home, is perfect. Fleece vests have their uses, but they aren't a uniform here (yet).
You must not be in Earth Sciences. A fleece vest over a flannel shirt with chinos and approach shoes has been the uniform since at least the late 90s.

"So thatโ€™s why I wanted to bring what I love, the tailoring. I dipped back to a three-button suit, which felt modern again."

Huh? Like the three-button suit had become passe or forgotten in the tailoring world?
It had to a large degree, I think. The three button suit was delivered de rigueur in the 90s, but generally passed out of favor at the turn of the millennium. Like all things 90s, it's now back for a spell.

No, I'm not in Earth Sciences - but I know what you mean: Geographers still look virtually the same although they tend more to actual technical gear. I have a foot in Geography (but it's a Human Geography foot). In social sciences, there is no uniform whatsoever...

When I tell people I went to Brown, they politely change the subject to spare me further association with leftist undesirables.

me, upon hearing that Brown is associated with leftist undesirables:
