Which of the two career options would you pick?

Gentlemen,

I have a question regarding career and business. I have two options: I either try to make a career at a multinational as a Software Engineer and grow from there to a Softwarearchitec / IT Consultant. I will be able to develop my knowledge (get lot’s of IT trainings, courses, certificates) and lot’s of different skills and I will have challenging projects. I will work about 50-60 hours a week.

The second option is to work for a Small and medium enterprises (or government) as a Software- or Network Engineer. Since budget is tight I have less opportunity to develop my knowledge (lower paced) and skills and will have projects that are sometimes challenging but mostly it will just be okay. I will work about 40-45 hours a week.
Next to that I’m starting up my own business in real estate. I’ll be studying for broker in the evenings and I’ll work as a broker for a brokerage a few hours in the weekends. After I did that for a while I’ll be able to get a loan (from my job as a Software-/Network Engineer) and I’m going to fix up houses in the evenings and weekends and rent them.

What are your thoughts about making a career at a multinational vs working at a SME and have an own business in real estate?

First option. Get as much training and knowledge as you canand then re-evaulate your career.

First option. Don't get distracted by real estate and all that - there will be time for that later should you choose to pursue it.

Seriously, give corporate world a chance and commit to putting all of your effort into making it, choose #1. If that doesn't work, adjust accordingly.

By choosing #2 you're more likely to fail or to remain average at everything - you won't make any kind of a real career in real estate because you'll be doing it part time, and you won't have the best career options or be able to put in a full effort when it comes to your full-time job.

I've worked in IT for 30 years. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up but I've never missed a meal (as I tell my kids and my tailor can attest). I did a lot of consulting, worked in product development and moved back into professional services. As long as you keep up with technology and have a half decent personality you can't be outsource from a customer-facing role. There is a huge shortage of IT people with a personality. Get all the training you can while you are young and your employer is paying for it.
