- When looking at tux trousers, what materials should I look for to determine if they are good quality?

- Generally, can any pair of decently made trousers be made to look good if they are altered nicely?

Thanks.

-wool, just like a good suit. Good wool as well.

- no, workmanship and cut are two different things. The trousers must at least somewhat fit to start.

It is also best to get a full tuxedo, instead of buying piecemeal and hoping they match (because they won't).

"Tuxedo trosuers" are namely that. You cannot take "any pair of decently made trousers " and pass them off.

A tuxedo or evening dress is no different from any suit - it is bought as coat and trousers not individual mix and match items. You will be telling us next that you do not realise it has the silk stripes at the side seam or you think that they can be added to any old trousers.
