What ties for what occasions?

A question for those who wear ties regularly to work, to social events and in their spare time: do you differentiate between different kinds of ties? Like, neatly patterned ties or regimental stripe ties for business, plain ones for social occasions, unusual materials (shantung, raw silk, linen, wool etc) for leisure or something of that kind?

I'm asking because I like the idea of reserving one kind of ties for a specific occasion, I imagine that I, for example, if I had to wear ties to work, I'd just wear stripes there.

depends on the day at work, the suit I'm wearing, my mood, the social event, etc etc.

I don't regiment my ties in such a way. I wear whatever I feel works best with the look I'm going for.

I'm pretty sure Manton has explicitly OK'ed wool ties in the winter for conservative business dress...

Others I can think of:

-Gray Glen Plaid technically = wedding, but it's okay to wear in everyday setting
-Satin silk material = formal
-Pindot = most formal pattern
-Shantung, linen = warm weather
-Wool, cashmere = cold weather

This is more like common wisdom; I thought more of something foo-like.

Not quite sure what you're asking. Looking for some esoteric rules :foo: made up?

I guess regimentals/repps are for daytime business. But you can certainly wear solids for that too.

I don't want to know rules made by foo, I was just wondering if someone has equally strict rules regarding his tie choice as foo has re:many things.

Is there any reason why you want to put such strict limitations on yourself?

Yes, it's for more or less the same reason I don't like working at home but go to the library instead. Separate work from play. Also, I'm a little ocd.
