What Questions Can You Ask To Judge A Tailor's Skill Level?

Often when I'm walking around NYC, I see some little hole-in-the-wall tailoring shop and wonder whether it might be some undiscovered gem of a resource. I'd like to go into a few of these places and try get a sense of their general skill level without offering up some garment and finding out the hard way -- what kinds of things would you ask a tailor to get a sense of their good judgement and craftsmanship without having to learn the hard way?

to gauge craftmanship, ask to see works in progress or finished works. can't tell anything about fit until you see a garment on a customer, but if you hang around long enough, one might come in.
