What is this spot on my Red Wings boot?

Hello all.

I have a small spot on the tip of the toe cap of my right boot. I know that at one point it got scuffed there, but one day all of a sudden it was very dark. I think I may have accidentally spilled cooking grease on the spot. It would be a fluke, but the spot seemed to appear overnight.

I've heard of leather getting mold, that may also appear as dark spots. Does anyone have an idea of how to get this out, whether it's grease or mold? I love these boots, and it bothers me looking at this spot every time I lace them up.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Something oily probably dripped on it. When that happens I just scratch it out and it fades away.
