I just received an invitation to a watchmaking dinner. I have never been to one, are they at all interesting? The guests of honor seem to be younger watchmakers, I wonder if it will be more or less interesting because of this.

I don't know whether it is worth attending. Any insight or experience would be much appreciated.

Some are fun, most are boring. I generally attend if I know some people going and/or if it is held at a really nice restaurant/club.

It's always interesting to chat with watchmakers and company representatives - if watches are something you're into

Is there a lot of pressure to buy? I haven't heard of most of the makers. They are Delahoye, Habring and McGonigle of whom I have not heard and Speake Marin and Halter whom I know a little about. Would this be an interesting group in your opinion, or too technical and dry fro somebody who is basically a watch neophyte?

Speake Marin is a cool dude and he makes interesting cases for his watches. Hebring is cool, but it won't take much to get him to "go technical" and bore you to death. Halter is a typical "artiste", a little crazy, a little wild, and very interesting. Definitely go and bring me back a Halter or Speake Marin for my troubles in replying to your post.

What's boring about that?

I think it would be hard to avoid dropping parts in your food while you ate. Might get messy.

There is zero pressure to buy (at least in any of the ones I attended). One thing to add is that there is usually a cool goodies bag (again, only matters if you have an interest in the subject)

There was (or is upcoming) a Glashutte dinner in NY in collaboration with TimeZone.

I like watches...but, I don't think enough to the point to sit around with strangers talking about them.
