I have a dance performance to give in about a week (Lindy hop) and the outfit that the performers are required to wear involves a vest with matching pants, white dress shirt, and a tie that matches our partner's blouse. I have the outfit, but the vest is bugging me - it has a buckle and strap in the back.

Don't get me wrong, the strap is nice in that it lets me tighten the waist of the vest ever so slightly. But what I DON'T like is how the remainder of the strap dangles like the tail of a whipped dog. ...which is to say, it droops. Is there some trick to buckling it so the tail doesn't hang?

I do NOT want to perform in a droopy vest.

Have a tailor shorten it for you (but not by TOO much) - it'd be quick and inexpensive - and if you know him/her well or have brought plenty of business they'd probably even do it for free.
