Untucked shirts are cool?

I understand that for casual wear, a lot of people consider that tucked-in shirts do not look cool. However, I just cannot stand leaving a shirt untucked. Polos and tee-shirts I normally do not tuck in, and I have a few short-sleeved shirts (which are not very long, by the way) and which I normally leave untucked (I do not like short-sleeved shirts anyway, and once these two or three I still have get worn out, I do not intend to get any new ones; in Spain a lot of people actually use short-sleeved shirts with suit&tie in summer, but that really looks awful, IMO).
Now, leaving long-sleeved shirts untucked just looks to "sloppy" to me; I always tuck them in (also casual button-down shirts). Any thoughts? Any rules?

Unless you're wearing a suit jacket or sports coat, I think a tucked in shirt just looks tacky. It's like a fully buttoned dress shirt with no tie.

I don't think it looks tacky, but I do think it look a little dorky on young guys (although, if it's put together well and part of your style it would be different, I'm talking about the guy who rolls up looking like he just got off of work at his business casual job). Don't forget that a lot of these guys here who say they always tuck in their button shirts are middle aged men whose idea of a night out is going to some fancy restaurant where they bring their own wine basket. For younger people, there's nothing wrong with wearing an untucked shirt when you're out on the town doing what young people do (clubbing, house parties, etc.).

*whew*.. im a little relieved haha. im 19, most of my tops are well fitting button-ups that end just below my belt. im inconsistent when it comes to tucking.
-with jeans, untucked.
-unless with a blazer or coat, tucked.
-when im wearing slim trousers without a coat, i feel sloppy not tucking in, and i feel awkward tucking in. Ill wait for more replies here to help me out on this.

I guess you are right, with 44 I guess I am middle-aged, and my idea about a night out is actually going to some fancy restaurant (except that in Spain you are normally not supposed to bring your own wine basket...). Yeah, I guess the issue may be the age...
Now, what indeed has surprised me is that on X-mas eve eight (8!) persons have actually bothered about writing down their opinions on untucked shirts! This is REEEEALLY SCAAAARY!

You're assuming that everyone posting celebrates x-mas.

Personally, I do most of my posting while sitting in the bathroom.
