Greetings! I wonder what the difference is between a Smoking and a Tuxedo?! Is there a difference at all?
I am looking for a smoking or a tuxedo that i can wear to formal occations in the future. I found some pictures. Here is Daniel Craig in a so called "Shawl collar style" tuxedo.

I really like the rounded collar more than the often seen classic collar. Like this

I have also noticed that some tuxedo pants have a silk line down the leg. What is the "classic" look of a tuxedo or a smoking, also the silk line on the collar of some.

Last question. What kind of shoes is ideal to wear with a tux?

Smoking is just a Scandinavian name for it? Same thing, anyhow.

The pants should have the silk braids as you mentioned.

Traditionally, appropiate shoes are opera pumps. However, nowadays, black patent leather oxfords will do.

One should also wear a cummerbound or a waistcoat.

Black bow tie, ALWAYS.

What is a "smoking"? Do you mean a smoking jacket - in which case they are very different and not interchangeable.

Smoking is also German for tuxedo.

So, if op is Scandanavian or German, there's no difference.

Smoking is also Italian for a dinner jacket.

No difference. In Italian, French and German the dinner suit is called 'smoking' (after the smoking jacket, which of course is something else). In American English it's called Tuxedo (after a club).

The trousers of a dinner suit should in fact have silk piping in material matching the one on the lapels. As for the lapels, shawl (rounded) and peak (pointy) are certainly correct. I think that notch (like most 'normal' suits) is also correct, but there is some debate about that. Single or double breasted are both correct (but of course not DB notch!). Never a belt, and never show the waist of the trousers: always wear a waistcoat or cummerbund with you dinner suit.

Shoes: plain or captoe laced oxfords in polished calf or patent leather are correct. Opera pumps (a kind of slip-on shoe) are more formal. Personally I hate patent leather.
