I'm facing a similar dilemma, I am in University but I have a black tie event coming up in January and I need to figure out if I can buy a tux by then, I am slightly broke so buying is looking like a problem, but I don't want to rent if I can help it

A good tailor can take it in a bit without harm - it will be much better than getting a 38 that is just way to big.

Thanks for confirming that suggestion. I will keep my eyes open.

Would it be crazy to order from an online tailor like mycustomtailor.com?

I prefer grosgrain. In fact, I would assume that someone who by default expects satin would not be turned off by grosgrain, making grosgrain more versatile even if less common.

Try this place http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Hogspear. Ideal for impovrished students, and also possibly for the OP, as from time to time they have items from the 20s and 30s which seem to be in smaller sizes.

I too would prefer grosgrain. I think your point about grosgrain being more versatile is well made.

Yes, I also much prefer grosgrain. I'd also second the recommendation for Hogspear - they have a lot of interesting merchandise. My only suggestions would be to scrutinise the description and photographs closely (but then you would do that with any vendor) and get in early with any questions.

I was watching 'Robin and the 7 Hoods' the other day and notice how Crosby and Sinatra, two slim men, looked good in double breasted tuxedos. Dean Martin a larger man was wearing a single breasted peak lapel.

(From the OP) Since, like me, some SF members got their start here looking for advice concerning formalwear, I thought I should post what I did.

Since I only wear a tuxedo 1-2 times per year, and am a small size, I bought a JAB Signature Peak Lapel 38S, had the shoulders and waist taken in, and a buttonhole put in the lapel. A tailor a block from my home did quite a nice job with all this. I paid a little less than $400 but, if patient, one can do better. About $40 for the tailoring.

Shirt from TM Lewin, the Marcella Prince Of Wales Semi-Fitted Men's Dress Shirt, altered for 32" sleeves. With shipping, the cost was about $55.

RLPL backless tux vest, grosgrain lapel, on eBay from an SFer (sharwood) for under $100.

Robert Talbott silk faille self-tie bow tie from Sam's Tailoring for $40.

Shoes, evening pumps from Broadland Slippers for about $150 shipped. Guessed at UK sizing and had some adjustments made locally for about $20.

Vintage Krementz cufflinks and studs (gold-filled, MOP) for $45.

Silk formal hose from I don't remember where. JAB? $20

White silk paisley pocket square, Kent Wang. $25

I already owned silk braces.

Total cost about $950. Looks great and I should get years of use.

just saw your post about tuxedo.....

you can always find great tux at huge discount during barney's warehouse sale....

the price is around $1800-2400 which i think it's very decent consider cheap tux looks cheap and sloppy..........

Yes, why not grosgrain? I recall Colin Harvey at A&S sharing with me that satin is a bit "theatrical." Given British understatement ... that was quite a harsh comment.

Ben Silver has some as well ... although at a higher (but not astronomical) price point.

While I own a pair or two of their trousers ... I don't own any Ben Silver coats ... so I am unfamiliar with their quality.
