Thermal underwear is one thing. I have not worn stockings since my theater days (Amadeus, if you want to know) and would tend to argue that one should no more wear tights today than wear jeans in a play set in the eighteenth century.

I would never want to wear that instead of trousers but I do wear thin thermal underwear that's very similar in the winter. (it's the washable Merino wool one, I forget the name but it's popular with hikers)

Weren't leggings on men populr during the early days of grunge? I'm thinking the inner sleeve of Pearl Jam's 'Ten', or the movie 'Singles'..?

And Cary Grant admitted quite innocently to wearing women's underwear.

It's a trend. I've been seeing leggings on young guys in the East Village for about a year now. Though not worn anything like the illustration in the OP.

I went to a little fashion party last night and several young guys had them on. With Doc Martin boots and other '80s throwback garments.

Personally, I wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole.

Yes, but you would WEAR them to show off your ten-foot-pole if you had one! (sorry, could not resist)
